Our homestead is small, but mighty. We homestead on just .25 acres and while we often dream of something bigger we’re happy with what we have. You may be wondering, what we could possibly do with such a small piece of land. Short answer, we do A LOT! We grow a garden, keep chickens, have dogs, a backyard pool, try to compost everything, focus on sustainable options and have plans to run a laundry line here in the near future.
While the dream is to live on a large homestead, it can be done on a small scale too. Homesteading is so much more than just living on a large piece of land and growing your own food. This is a lifestyle of sustainable choices made daily that add up to an environmentally friendly self sufficient way of living.
It’s learning to make your own bread instead of buying it from the store. Homesteading is growing your own veggies and figuring out how to use them all whether they were rotten or not. It’s figuring out that the more you get into homesteading the less city services you need. You can collect your own water and filter it yourself. You can harness your own energy. As homesteaders, you can cut out plastics, re-purpose items, feed leftovers to pigs or pets, and compost leftovers. You can move to a septic system and cut ties with your cities systems.
Regardless of size, there’s always something you CAN do, today to better your homestead and your life for the future. While I normally like to share posts that teach you something new, this post is solely for the purpose of encouraging you. Homesteading can seem like a huge undertaking, lots of work, and less couch time and it i but it is also a way to build a life that worth remembering, a life that lets you never stop learning and keeps you fit without ever having to join a gym. It lets you build your dreams by freeing up dollars to go after things bigger than just paying your bills and surviving the day to day. Truly, it does not matter is you have .2 acres or 20 acres, if you rent a room or own a magnificent property you can do some type of homesteading!
We have come far in our homesteading journey on just .25 acres and we hope that this simple post can be an encouragement to you that regardless of size, you can do this too! Homesteading is hard work but so is anything that’s worth doing. Do you currently homestead?
