Those who’ve been to our home know it doesn’t look much different from any other home in the neighborhood. We live in a cinderblock home on 1/4 of an acre like everyone else, it looks normal. You don’t really notice how our homestead is a homestead until you pay attention to the simple details, and that’s okay. It’s still very much a homestead! If you’re like us and living on a tiny homestead, or you’re insterested on starting a homestead but you don’t have much land, it’s okay! Here’s 4 benefits on why it’s great to have a tiny homestead.
While not always true, typically those who live on a tiny homestead live in more urban or suburban areas. This makes it easier to get around, rush to the store, or even meet up with friends on the weekend. I personally love how close our homestead is to everything. We can go to the beach, the country and deep into the woods all in the same day. My heart loves the country side of the larger homesteads but for now I’m enjoying every moment of the convenience that comes with owning a smaller homestead.
Let’s face it, the smaller the homestead the cheaper the homestead. I’m sure there are exceptions to the rule but in general having a smaller homestead means less taxes, less upkeep, less land to fence, and less things to break or maintain. Our homestead land and our home are both on the reletively smaller side which is a huge blessing financially. We aren’t rich by any means but owning a smaller homestead helps us get closer to our dream of being debt free faster than we ever would on a larger homestead.
This largely ties into the “cheaper” point but owning a smaller homestead helps you be more efficient. Your space is limited which means you have to become extremely efficient with every square inch of your homestead. Due to limited space your resources are also limited so you have to get creative in order to maximize them and often, you can’t have all the tools in the world because there is no space to store them.
The smaller the homestead, the more manageable it is. Less grass to mow, less gardens to weed, less to care for in general. It makes your homestead much more manageable when you have a smaller space. While I often dream of a larger homestead, for us, having a smaller one is great! I do a great deal of the work with the weeds, the gardens, and the animals because my husband works 12 hr days. Having a smaller homestead at this stage of life means our home is more manageable for me to maintain
While I truly do dream of more land, more privacy, and more space to homestead it is good to remember that there are benefits to a smaller homestead too. It’s true the smaller homestead isn’t the homestead everyone dreams of but sometimes the biggest blessing in life is having exactly what you need right at the stage you’re at.
