As a homesteader prepping for a relaxing weekend can be tough. Unlike most occupations homesteading is a 24/7 job. Their is no such thing as a weekend off. Adding plants and animals to your home means that you are continuously responsible for their health, care and well being. Fortunately, it seems that the most difficult thing to take care of is dogs. If you can take care of a dog then you can certainly take care of other homestead plants and animals. Other things seem to do a great job of following their own instincts and taking care of themselves.
While homesteading is extremely rewarding there’s often also a great need to enjoy a restful and relaxing weekend. While the rest of the world can often go take a weekend vacation or go on a long day trip, as a homesteader this has to be strategically planned around plant and animal care so sometimes, instead of going away for a weekend, planning some time to take care of yourself for the weekend can be vital for your health, happiness, and well-being. Here are 11 steps to help you have a relaxing weekend.
Clean & Organize Your Room
One of the quickest ways for me to feel relaxed and calm is to have a well organized and clean bedroom. To allow myself time to spend with friends, enjoy the weekend, and spend some time outdoors when trying to enjoy a relaxing weekend I have to set myself up for success right away. On a weekend where I’m trying to rest and relax I move my room cleaning tasks from my usual Saturday morning routine over to Friday night. I turn on our bedroom defuse, and the string of outdoor lights and get to work. Here are my 7 essentials to keep our bedroom clean
- Change the sheets
- Dust off fan blades and air vents
- wipe down doors from any dust
- clean windows & mirrors
- keep all surfaces clear
- put all laundry where it belongs
- vacuum the entire floor once or twice
Open Some Windows
For me, opening the windows and allowing some fresh air to flow in helps our whole home instantly feel cleaner. Our house isn’t big so I typically open 3 windows, one in each of the rooms we spend a ton of time in. Our bedroom window, kitchen window and office window all get opened to let some stale air out and fresh air in. This not only helps the air feel better it also helps me feel energized and rejuvenated as I clean our home.
While I touched on this briefly as a step to follow while cleaning the bedroom, having a vacuumed floor makes my home feel like a whole new place. With pet fur and Florida sand always threatening my attempts at a clean home we do not skimp on paying for high quality floor cleaning products. We recently invested in a Samsung robot vacuum and our floors have never been cleaner! This has greatly reduced my need to spend time cleaning every inch of our floor 2x per day and has made my weekend cleaning schedule a breeze.
Turn on a Diffuser
Whether you believe in the power of essential oils or not, having a diffuser wafting clean scents into the air is a welcomed part of cleaning your home. Sometimes odd or stale odors can fill our homes and instead of using harmful, chemical filled air fresheners, use a diffuser. Turning on a diffuser can help you breathe easy while still enjoying a clean and calm scent.
Clean Hard Surfaces
Wipe down the windowsills, fan blades, desks, fireplaces, baseboards and anything else that is a hard surface that can hold dust and dirt. Making this a weekly task will help eliminate so many germs from your home. It will also make your cleaning routine become easier and easier each week as their will be less nastiness flying around in your home. I like to also use the time of cleaning the hard surfaces in my home to also declutter anything that may have made it’s way into my home that doesn’t belong or to put away anything that has become out of place throughout the week.
Wash & Fold Laundry
I am completely guilty of being someone who is great at getting my laundry washed, dried, but never folded. I have the habit of bringing it into our living room where it will sit on the couch for a few days. Break the cycle and fold the laundry the same day! (Speaking to myself here) Not only will this help your home feel more clean and clutter free,it will also help you feel good about accomplishing the task completely and not having to think about it again until the next laundry day.
As much as I love them, having pets is just disgusting. They have fur that falls out everywhere. Paws that love to trap in dirt and release it on the living room floor. Drool. Slobber, and a natural love for things like trash, mud, and anything that would be a threat to your freshly cleaned home. Help cut down on the grossness of having a pet in your home by bathing them, brushing them, and grooming them before the weekend. This will help you enjoy your freshly cleaned home without your pets threatening all of the hard work you’ve recently done.
This is my least favorite task but washing all of the dishes and having them neatly put away makes me feel so good about myself, my home, and my life. For some reason, this small task makes all the difference when it comes to self esteem, calmness, and having it together. For me, if my counters are clear and my sink is clean even if it’s just for a moment. I feel as if I can do anything.
Meal prepping has basically changed my life (and my weekends)! Have a few soups frozen to grab on a busy day. Pre-chop lettuce. Organize the fridge by day each item will be used. All of these things are tiny steps that make all the difference when it comes to meal prepping. Some like to prep their weekday meals, I like to prep my weekend meals. Crockpot food ready to go that can be thrown into the pot put on high for 4 to 10 hrs and moving on with my life has made all the difference when it comes to regaining rest and relaxation into my life.
Plan Time for Yourself
This one has to be one of my all time favorite parts about weekends. Planning time to do a face mask, re-do my nails, go for an extra long walk, or even just sitting down and eating a plate of food with no screens or distractions makes a huge difference in my attitude and what I have to offer in service towards others. Sometimes just spending the evening sitting on my bed, scrolling through Pinterest, cleaning out my email, or aimlessly walking around Target can help me feel productive and ready for the week ahead. Grocery Pickup or Drop-Off
While I’m honestly not the biggest fan of grocery pickup services, I know tons of people that are. For this reason I feel that it is super important to include this in the list so that. When I make time for it I find grocery shopping extremely enjoyable but I know dozens of people who absolutely hate the task and would prefer to sit in their car or better yet, have it delivered to their home. If this is something you’d enjoy or your planning to enjoy a weekend in consider getting your groceries delivered instead oh heading out to get them yourself.
Each of these tasks will not take up a huge portion of your time on their own but can make a big difference in your weekend. If accomplished on a Friday night they can help you enjoy an easy and relaxing time with friends and family! Have kids to take care of? Make them join in on the cleaning. You’ll get to spend time together and they’ll learn the value of cleaning and taking care of your home.
