Keeping your home clean as a homesteader is no easy feat. There is always a project needing done, a homesteading season to prep for, animals finding their way inside, and dirt, sand, and dust making it’s way in after a hard days work. So how can you keep your home clean? Here are 10 tips to help keep your home clean!
No Shoes Rule
While it’s easiest to keep your shoes on when you’re making a quick trip indoors for water, a bathroom break, or a quick snack your shoes welcome a host of bacteria and nastiness into your home. Take your shoes off before entering your home. It will help keep your home cleaner and make any cleaning you do need to do much easier.
Purifying Plants Indoors
Air quality is important to your overall health and wellbeing. Help clean up your air quality by purchasing an indoor air purifying plant or two that will help keep your air clean and your family healthy. Here’s a list of some of my favorite indoor plants if you’re looking for inspiration.
Brush Pets Often
While every pet has their own brushing needs keeping your pet clean is one of the easiest way to help keep your home clean. Regular pet brushing can help keep down dust, dander, and the constant need for a lint roller.
The more you learn about dust the more disgusted you will be. Help avoid dust by applying cleaner or even water to a cloth to help wipe down surfaces and keep them clean. While using a feather duster or a similar product might feel more fun and efficient it actually just spreads the dust and moves it to another place. Don’t let this happen clean up the dust for good by using a reusable cloth to clean surfaces.
Keep up with Laundry
Very few love doing laundry and many find it easy to fall behind on getting it all done. Find a laundry schedule or system that works for you and stick to it. Whether that be throwing a load in the wash every morning or doing it immediately when the laundry basket gets full, commit yourself to a system and stick to it.
Keep Décor Minimal
It’s easy to accumulate decorations especially if you live on a farm or homestead. If it doesn’t serve a purpose or have immense sentimental value move it, store it, donate it, or get rid of it. Keeping décor minimal will not only help your space to feel bigger it will help keep your home cleaner by giving dust fewer places to hide.
Clean Countertops Daily
Every night, before bed, make sure your kitchen counters are empty and wiped down will help you wake up feeling refreshed and one step ahead of the game when you start the new day.
Invest in Solid Cleaning Tools
Being frugal is important but when it comes cleaning this isn’t the place to cut corners. Buy the expensive vacuum or the fancy mop. Invest in a good dishwasher, or whatever supply will truly make your home cleaner while also simplifying your life. We recently invested in a robotic vacuum and I feel like it’s one of the best investments we’ve ever made. I come home from work to spotless floors and feel like I had a cleaning crew come and do my floors. Best investment ever.
Make Bed Daily
One of the simplest ways to keep your home clean and tidy is to make your bed every single morning. It is a quick and easy way to accomplish something first thing in the morning and it helps make your home feel put together and orderly.
Open Windows Weekly
No matter how many air purifiers and plants you put into your home nothing can quite compete with true fresh air. Whether the weather is warm or cold open your windows weekly for at least 30 minutes to help filter fresh air into your home and environment.
