Things to do with the Darker Evenings

With shorter daylight hours it can feel like the only thing left to do when 5 o’clock hits is to curl up on the couch and watch TV. It’s easy to lose creativity, become sluggish, or just fall into unmotivated/unproductive patterns. Even with the natural tendencies of the darker hours to rest, relax, and sleep beckoning you, here are some alternative things you can do to be productive after the sun has gone down.

1. FINISH INTERIOR PROJECTS

If you’re like me you’ve had a list of home projects a mile long ever since you moved in. Make the commitment to yourself to get the projects done. Recruit family members to join you, turn on some music or a good holiday movie and get to work. Whether its organizing a closet you’ve been avoiding or painting those baseboards, make a commitment to yourself to get the project done and finish it!

2. PLAN FOR THE HOLIDAYS

This time of year fly’s by extremely fast. Don’t feel rushed with the planning of it the day before. Instead, write out the Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner menus, plan the décor and days itinerary, get the recipes ready, and plan for a smooth and successful holiday.

3. READ THOSE BOOKS

Everyone loves a good book but how often do we plan to read something only to get lazy and turn on the TV instead? Commit to investing in yourself, your education and your mind and read a good book. It may be a fiction, a self help, a biography, or even a recipe
book, it doesn’t matter. Just sit down, read, stretch your mind and view the world through someone else’s point of view.

4. PRACTICE BETTER COOKING

Darker days mean more time inside with friends and family. Make the time you spend around the table extra special by practicing new recipes and investing in good hearty ones you can all enjoy.

5. GET CREATIVE

For me, one of the hardest parts about the darker days is the absence of the beautiful colors of the outdoors. Get creative and add those colors back into your life. Try watercolor, start a sewing project, download a free design app or try a trial version. Be creative. Explore design. Enjoy new colors. You’ll be amazed at what you can do when you put your mind to it.

6. PLAN A VACATION.

Time flies by without us even being aware so get started on planning that next vacation. 2019 is right around the corner and flights, hotels, and tourists attractions will quickly be selling out when people start planning their vacations once the new year hits. Get ahead of the game and plan yours now. The benefits of early planning are huge! Less stress, more savings, better availability, and of course you can budget the trip out perfectly so you’re not going into debt to make memories.

7. SPEND TIME WITH FAMILY

Between yard work, house work, school work and your real job it can be exhausting to think about spending time with family at the end of a long, hard day. Do it anyway. Put down your phone, log out of social media for an evening (or a month) and commit to fully spending time with your family. Play a game, go for a hike, watch a movie together, eat a special meal and spend extra time around the table, go out for ice cream, whatever it is do something together! No one has ever said that they wished they spent more time on social media but many have said they wish they would have spent more time with family. Don’t have regrets, spent time with the people God has placed in your life.

8. TRY SOMETHING NEW

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut and lose all creativity when your life is packed too full. The darker evenings offer more time to spend investing in yourself because there’s less distractions of things to do outdoors. Try a painting class, visit a coffee shop with a friend and test a new flavor, join a workout class you’ve never done before. Get out, try new things, and explore the world around you. You’d be amazed at what you can accomplish when you spend time investing in trying something new.

I hope this list has been an asset to you and will inspire you to get out and try new things in the world around us! Homesteading, farming, city living, or just any way of life can often be intense and exhausting when you don’t add new things every so often. Don’t let that get you down. Try new things. Expand yourself. Put down technology. Build face to face relationships and don’t waste another second doing something that doesn’t improve your life or make you feel more alive.

Have you tried something new? Share with us in the comments! We’d love to hear what you are doing with these darker evenings to better improve your life!
